Victoria Falls World Challenge Pigeon Race (ZIM)

Winners & ace pigeons

The international one loft race of Victoria Falls has very quickly become a prestigious event. Many OLR fanciers consider this fairly new race to be the number one event for the future, because it has everything: strong management, efficient communication, an environment that allows for fair competition in which the strongest birds prevail, it is a wonderful holiday destination, and there is more than 1 million US dollar to be won. Top players from across the globe send in their best pigeons for this prestigious race, whose race winners and ace pigeons have gained a worldwide reputation.

This year’s final was a thrilling race over 619km, with a release at 7:30am, and the first pigeon arriving home only the following morning at 6:59am. The race winner had an impressive 53 minute lead over the second place winner, and the entire top ten was clocked after 1 hour and 45 minutes. The final was an honest race in which the most gifted birds stood out in demanding conditions. We saw ‘proper pigeon racing weather’: a strong headwind, no major obstacles along the way, and around 28 degrees throughout the day. The sun sets quite early in Zimbabwe, at around 6:30pm, so the pigeons do not have much time to cover ground on the first day. The sun rises at 6:45am, at which point the pigeons started to head home, with the winning pigeon reaching a velocity of about 900 m/min, not including the nightly hours. The strongest birds could really show their potential - it is no coincidence that the pigeon that held a first place in the ace pigeon ranking throughout the buildup eventually finished in 16th place in the final.

Prior to the final we had 5 hotspots covering the following distances: 192 - 235 - 235 - 318 - 450 km. From mid-April, three months before the final, the pigeons did an additional 100km training flight every two days, aside from the hotspots. The first trainings took place with 3,800 pigeons, and 1,482 pigeons eventually made it through to the final. All the big guns from One Loft Racing had entered this race, which makes this probably one of the most competitive fields in the OLR competition.
